How I made this print

I’ve created this stencilled print of Belted Galloways by individually printing it by hand onto Zerkall paper. It’s based on a selection of photos I took of “Belties” in the Kirkcudbright area. I used extra sharp tools to carve a plastic stencil. Once the stencil was carved, I printed through it onto the paper using water-based pigment inks to create the print.

Every print in a batch is made in the same way by inking through the stencil. I tear the edges of the paper to create the deckled effect, and float mount onto black mountboard. This results in a succession of seemingly identical but actually unique prints – each and every one is an individual, hand crafted and original work of art.

I first created this print in 2012, the year that the Olympic Games were hosted in the UK. “Team GB” was the name adopted by the British Olympic Association for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team of athletes. The title of the print is therefore a play on words, referring to my “team” of Belted Galloways!

Further Details

If you like the torn edges of this stencilled print of Belted Galloways, you might also be interested in my monochrome linocut of “Oyster Catchers“. Other monochrome prints to look at would be Sea Holly, or Egret.

I blind print my chop seal in the corner so it appears to be embossed.

Print size is 10″ x 4″ (25cm x 10cm) approx.

The print comes mounted and ready to frame, with bevel-cut mount – overall size is 13″ x 7″ (33cm x 18cm) approx.

I float mount the torn-edge print onto the black mountboard with 3M spraymount. I also attach an information sheet explaining how the print was made on the reverse.

The print comes packaged in a crystal clear cellophane bag. I send prints in a board-backed envelope by Royal Mail.
