How I made this artwork
I’ve created this limited edition pochoir artwork of a rose by individually inking each one by hand through a series of stencils onto Zerkall paper. The design is based on a rose from a bunch my Mum and Dad gave me. I was struggling to come up with a title for this piece other than just “rose”, and I was delighted to discover that this variety of rose is called “high and magic”!
This is an original work which has been individually crafted using a stencilling technique known as pochoir. The image has been created by “painting” with inked sponges to apply the many layers of colour through a series of hand cut stencils. For this design I cut a total of 11 stencils and used 8 colours to build up the image to its final form. At its most basic level, stencilling involves applying ink equally over the whole cut area of the stencil to achieve blocks of solid colour. However, the method used here involves applying the colour in careful gradations on certain areas within the stencil for each petal. This lends a painterly effect to the design and ensures that each one is truly individual and hand crafted. Working in this way produces a ‘variable edition’, where every one in this series of 12 (had to be a dozen, didn’t it!) is a unique, handmade, original work of art.

This original artwork comes mounted and ready to frame, with double black bevel-cut mount – overall size is 10″ x 10″ (25.5cm x 25.5cm approx.)
I mount the work onto the backing board using photo corners. I also attach an information sheet explaining how the design was made on the reverse.
The work comes packaged in a crystal clear cellophane bag. I send in a board-backed envelope by Royal Mail.
